"EAA Grassroots Action Required Now! Say No to User Fees!”

"Urgent Action Needed" - Notification to All EAA Members

On August 7, 2007, EAA sent a mass e-mail to all EAA members (with e-mail addresses on file) enlisting their immediate help in urging U.S. Senators and Representatives to reject user fees for general aviation.

The user fee debates are approaching their climax. When Congressional leaders return from their summer break on September 7, final debate will begin in earnest. Versions of H.R. 2118 and S. 1300 will be addressed by them shortly after September 7, then forwarded to a joint committee to work out differences between the two bills. After the joint committee approves a joint bill, the proposed legislation will go to the White House for the President’s signature. This could occur within a two- to four-week period.

EAA is asking you, your friends, your neighbors, and airport partners to WRITE NOW.

Inform your elected congressional leaders you support House Bill 2881 (no user fees) and are strongly opposed to the user fee sections of Senate Bill 1300. .

REPLACEMENT AIRMAN CERTIFICATE REQUESTS MADE EASY
Need a new airman certificate? Perhaps your certificate is lost or destroyed (maybe the dog ate it), you want to upgrade from a paper to a plastic certificate, or you want to change your airmen certificate number from your social security number. You can request a replacement certificate from the FAA. Online requests can be processed within seven to 10 calendar days (allow a few days for mailing), according to the FAA. There is a $2 fee for replacing lost or destroyed certificates; however, it is free if you are changing your airmen certificate number from your social security number. EAA Chapter 582 takes
1st Place
in the 2005 Maumee Holiday Light Parade!

Click any photo for a larger image. Sorry for the poor quality, my little digital doesn't do night shots very well. Tony.

I would like to thank everyone who came out for the parade and all who helped on the float. We had over 40 people working on the float and in the parade. If you haven't heard we took 1st place, woo hoo!.  The weather was great for a winter parade and the snow held off until we got to the restaurant. I wish I had a time lapse video of the float going together it was truly an exercise in CRM.  I think we have a good chance that Santa will be really good to us this year. Tony Kirk took some great photos, so look for them on our web site. If there we any others there that took pictures please forward them to Tony or me and we'll get them on the web site. Once again thank you to all.

I just got this from EAA's website.

Each of us should take a little time to contact our legislators and let them know how we feel about this extreme tax increase. And request their support for the reintroduction and approval of the two bills, House Bill 518 and Senate Bill 230.

EAA WORKING  TO REPEAL REGISTRATION FEE HIKE IN OHIO

January 4, 2005 - EAA is working with several of its Ohio Members in an attempt to repeal what has been termed a grossly unfair increase in the aircraft registration tax that went into effect in 2004. The 2003 Ohio Legislature established a flat $100 license tax for all aircraft. That represented a 1600 percent increase for two-place aircraft, which had been $6.

In many ways, this is an economically discriminatory tax, which makes two-place aircraft owners pay the same registration tax as a 15-place business jet. Last year, EAA members and GA aircraft owners worked with their local state representatives to introduce two bills (House Bill 518 and Senate Bill 230), which called for a $15 per seat registration tax, but neither bill made it to the floor during the 2004 Ohio legislative year.

Over the recent holiday season, as several aircraft owners received their $100 aircraft registration tax notices, the effort began on a new push to re-introduce both bills. EAA is currently working with Board Member Emeritus Jim Gorman, EAA members Donald Peters, Brian Matz, Frank Castronovo, and many EAA Chapter Presidents to get the bills reintroduced. Peters, who owns a Piper J-3 Cub and operates from a private grass strip, wants to mobilize plane owners and aviation enthusiasts to contact their elected state officials to get the new legislation passed.

“We need to get Ohio’s aviation people excited and calling their legislators,” Peters said. “$100 for all airplanes is grossly unfair.” Light-sport aircraft also are assessed a $100 annual registration tax, he added.

For a directory of the Ohio House of Representatives, click here.

For a directory of Ohio State Senators, click here.

According to the Ohio Office of Aviation, there are approximately 11,000 licensed aircraft in the state using 164 public and 743 privately owned airports. General aviation’s total economic impact is estimated in excess of $2.1 billion.

EAA will be keeping Ohio Chapters and members informed as these two bills progress through the Ohio legislative processes.

Stuff from 2004

Wellllll!!! Was that a banquet or what!

My heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to every one of our members who
participated in a very successful fund raising auction at our annual Winter
Awards Banquet.

We truly had an impressive number of high quality, desirable items. These
were all auctioned off in a fast paced, fun filled, 60 minutes with the
chapter realizing a profit of just over $2000.00, a record for our fund
raising auction. My personal gratitude is extended to chapter members Jerry
Hoot, Mike Whitescarver and Lonnie Prince for their help during the auction.

Almost every member who won a high bid went home with a real bargain,
saving substantial amounts over normal retail purchasing, even wholesale
buying.

The chapter tool inventory was substantially increased through the very
generous donation of approximately $500.00 in hand tools donated by Tom
Leonhardt, P51 builder and long-time chapter member. When Tom's items were
being offered the members all voiced their desire to have them donated into
the tool inventory, available to all, rather than auction them off. So,
they were. Included in Tom's wonderful gift was his collection of 42 years
of Sport Aviation from 1961 forward. At this rate we will one day have a
complete library of Sport Aviation from the very first issue. A wonderful
and historically important treasure of valuable information and resources.

President Lonnie Price is to be congratulated for negotiating the $600.00
banquet hall fee to ZERO dollars. Lonnie also personally supported my
efforts by contacting every chapter member by telephone requesting
participation in the auction through a tax deductible gift of merchandise
that could be auctioned off in the chapter's behalf.

Lonnie also contacted area businesses including several restaurants with
positive and appreciated responses. Their gift certificates were used as
raffle prizes, with the single exception of Wally's on St. Rte. 795. Owner
Mike, who had initially agreed to support our auction with a $20.00 gift
certificate in recognition of the large 582 patronization each Saturday
morning, left 20 minutes after offering a $20.00 gift certificate. Just 30
minutes later our driver, who traveled more than 40 miles round trip,
arrived to pick up the certificate. It was declined.

Additionally, we were not able to auction the 50 gallons of av gas donated
by Wood County because Mike Hodges, at the very last second, was unable to
attend for health reasons. Mike has indicated he will still make the av gas
available and it might be auctioned to the highest bidder at the next
chapter meeting. Former member Chuck Shapler, a retired engineer and
professional artist generously donated two of his paintings and somehow the
driver who had volunteered to pick them up did not follow through and we
were not able to offer that beautiful artwork at the auction. However,
Chuck has offered to make them available for a future auction and we will
pick them up tomorrow.

I am personally grateful to all of our members for having made the 2004
chapter auction a huge success. Virtually the only banquet expenses were
the band and the awards (all very deserved) since the hall was free and
dinner fees covered meal costs and we had an open bar. The auction
eliminated the banquet and awards expense and allowed a very substantial
four-figure amount to be contributed into the chapter treasury. Precise
numbers will be available during the Treasurer's Report at the March Meeting.

Sincerely,
Randall Reihing

Scout- Young Eagles @ Metcalf

The Saturday Young Eagle flight went well with over 30 young eagle kids flown. Working Ground was Zella Schramm and Kathy Prince. Pilots were Ron Sturgill, Loren Satler, Tom Lawrence, Jim Wurst, Larry Kaiser, Lonnie Prince, Nick Herman.

We had two Experimental Aircraft flying Young Eagles at our Saturday event which are always a hit and true spirit of the EAA. Jim Davis with his Barracuda and John McAvoy in his high performance Long-Eze. Thanks guys for the help

Thank all of you very much. Waffles made to order were served to the workers.

I sent a letter out yesterday informing I would be cooking FRESH Waffles, actually I should have phrased it cooked to order waffles. It was never meant to compete with the waffles made at the last breakfast we had at BG.

I have no deeper respect than for the lady that runs Cafe 582, she is one of the most hard working persons we have in our Chapter. Cafe 582, the Supper we had last month at the members meeting, future supper meetings and help she volunteers benefits our Chapter greatly.

At the last breakfast at BG Chris Keast was just a few days out of the hospital and still insisted on setting up and running the breakfast. Folks this is dedication. She made Waffles for two days ahead of the event so we could sell them at the breakfast. She plans and makes purchases for all our breakfast well in advance and is always ready.

I never heard it mentioned, but a few thought their waffles were on the hard side, my waffle at the breakfast was perfect. As guys are, some joked about them. My statement in yesterday E-Mail indicating I was going to make FRESH waffles was just a statement that I was making them on site. I was told I upset my Cafe 582 chairman and that is the last thing I would ever want to do.

My chairmen work hard for this chapter and I really appreciate what they do for our benefit.

My apologies Chris. I will try to do better in the future.

Lonnie Prince

582 is SPAM. For those of you who receive their e-mail through America On Line (AOL), you won't be receiving any e-mail from EAA 582. It seems that AOL has identified our mail list as SPAM and falls within their unsolicited e-mail policy.  We are currently in contact with AOL to see what we (or they) can do to remedy the problem. The Awards Banquet 2003 will probably go down as the most successful Banquet to date.  An extra effort was made by the organizers to make this an extra special occasion for the spouses of our members. From the comments overheard, they were successful in their endeavor.  Over 80 people were in attendance, with good food, good companionship, and a good speaker.

Our gratitude goes out to all who helped make this event happen; Ron Smolinski, Lonnie Prince, Bill Hirzel, Randy Reihing, Nick Herman, John McAvoy, their better halves who did most of the work, and the others who names I will remember 30 milliseconds after I hit "Publish".

As always, a picture is worth a thousand words.

A DISCUSSION FORUM area was added to the web site. This is a good place to put questions, answers, comments, etc. Check it out.

MEMBERS ONLY ALSO - If you've been checking out the site on a regular basis, you notice that a MEMBERS ONLY area is now installed. This is a secure area that requires a password. You should be receiving a post card soon that tells you how to access this area.  As the webmaster gets more time (and ideas),  this area will start containing more information that is relevant to our members.  If your not yet a member, then download the SIGNUP sheet and send it in. (John 2/7/03)

YOUR TERMINATED.  Look at the mailing label on your Newsletter. In the upper right corner is a number. If this number is 2002. YOUR TERMINATED.  In the words of Arnold Swartzinager We really do WANT YOU BACK.  Chapter 582 has a very bright future and we need your help.  Please fill out the RENEWAL FORM and mail it in with you 2003 dues.  (John 2/03/03)

Toledo 582 Board of Directors meet for the first time in our new home, The Wood County Airport Terminal Building. From the Agenda that President Lonnie Prince laid out, it looks as if 582 has a very bright future.

Ron Smolinski has taken on the task of coordinating the clean up and preparation of the upstairs areas. We'll probably start moving equipment and materials when the weather warms up.

We've already scheduled several activities at the facility, these include several Pancake Breakfast type flyins. Chris Keast will be heading up that department (CAFE 582)  Look at the CALENDAR for the schedule dates

The Board approved the use of the new official LOGO.  This modern logo tells the story of Toledo 582. We'll start using it on our documents and newsletters.

Plane Fun Chairman John Mc Avoy briefly discussed the status of the Fly in. A budget has been submitted and will require member approval.

A Member Only area of the web site has been discussed and will be implemented in the near future. Access to this area will be for Toledo 582 members Only. (John 1/21/03)

IDBadge.jpg (8425 bytes)Color Photo Membership Badges will be issued as your photo becomes available (part of the new database the chapter is implementing.)  I like these for two reasons, they help newcomers feel part of the chapter, and they also help me (and newcomers) remember peoples names.  I've also heard that if you show Wally's this card, they will give you a free cup of coffee for only $1.25.  (John 11/23/02)

Chapter 582 will be transferring all of its database files to a new database during the next Membership Renewal cycle. The old database, maintained by Ron Sturgill has been around since the DOS days. First Choice was a very popular office integration program that dates back to the early 8086 days (1985 for you non computer types). Ron was forced to move some of the data to his new computer, but its been difficult.

In with the New - John McAvoy gave the Board of Director a preview of a Microsoft Access program that he purchased 10 years ago, and has since severely modified and updated. The program, runs under Access (you must have Microsoft Office or Microsoft Access already installed) and makes use of powerful, yet simple Windows menu structures to allow the operator to sort, display, and print the data set.

Some of the features include

Integration of Member photos into the database, i.e. Not only will you get a membership roster, but each persons name will have a their photo. ( I love this feature, now I can connect the faces with the names)

Member lists that can be sorted by several keys, for instance, City or phone number - Who lives near you.,  Aircraft types - Who's building or owns what aircraft, And one of my favorite FIRST NAME - I love this one, I can always remember their first name, but can't seem to put a last name with it.

Membership Tools and Skills; What members possesses special tools, equipment, and skills, These are sort able and printable.

Member Name Badges, With Member picture, name, and Chapter LOGO

    E-Mail addresses

    Database of suppliers and vendors.

Sort and print a membership rosters PLUS, the Ability to print a handsomely bound Membership Booklet that contains many of the database sorts; A Really First Class Membership roster.

Some of the Database tools that the Chapter Administrators will love are;

Automatic printing of the EAA Annual report; i.e. Officers, committees, and members, All printed up and ready to drop in the mail.

Automatic printing of Renewal Notices that go out to members.

Sorted lists of Volunteers and committees

Sorted list of Chapter Assets (A BIG plus at Tax Time)

Easy administering of Mailing lists for Members, Guests, and those that receive a Gratis Newsletter. (Also can administer a Bulk Mail list, in case we ever decide to do that)

NOW THE PUNCH LINE!  What's this going to cost the Chapter -  NOTHING, The Database program is donated by John McAvoy. The only stipulation is, USE IT.

When you receive your Annual Renewal Notice (included with the newsletter) Take the time and fill it out. Don't forget to send in a nice photo. This information will then be entered into the database. Come March or April, New rosters will be printed that will incorporate the changes supplied by you.

PLEASE TAKE THE TIME AND DO IT RIGHT

First, we should thank Tom Loenhardt and Jim Wurst for volunteering to host the Toledo Public School meetings. They get their a little early and get the coffee on, supply the refreshments, and just make sure things are right for the meeting. Thanks Tom and Jim.

ON TO BUSINESS

Major topic of the night was a discussion about acquiring a modular building to be used for the interim Education Facility, The Annual Board elections, and of course our guest speaker, Steve Frushour.

MODULAR BUILDING. After discussion regarding finances and purchase, a Motion was made and carried to approach the seller and request a 30 day  lock on an intent to purchase. In the mean time, location and finances would be explored.

A follow-up motion was made and approved that no financial commitments were to be made regarding this purchase without board approval.  A board meeting is set for 28 Oct at the Comfort Inn to discuss this issue (see CALENDAR).

ELECTIONS were held to vote in the Chapter officers for 2003. From the looks of it, we have and excellent team of officers who will lead us into 2003. The following members will make up the Executive board of Chapter 582. Their office takes effect 1 January 2003;

Lonnie Prince 2003.jpg (14478 bytes)  President 2003: Lonnie Prince

Nominated were the incumbent Ron Smolinski, and John Mc Avoy.  John withdrew his name from the hat as he stated he was already loaded up by being Chairman of the Plane Fun 2003 event, and the Web site.

Mike Whitescarver 2003.jpg (16982 bytes)  Secretary 2003: Mike Whitescarver. Mike is the current Vice president

GUEST SPEAKER

Steve Frushour 2003.jpg (16524 bytes)Guest Speaker Steve Frushour served a combat tour in Vietnam. Steve flew 157 combat missions  as a FAC (Forward Air Controller) in a L-19 BirdDog. Steve shared some of his experiences as a Pilot during Vietnam, and more recently, as the owner of his own L-19. (Steve says the banks owns it, he just gets to fly it)

Chapter 582 NLE

To find Rocky Ridge Airfield: From Maumee and I-475, take the Anthony Wayne
Trail into Waterville. At the second traffic light turn right, or west. Go
up the hill and bear to the right. Follow St. Rte 64. When you cross the RR
tracks the Waterville Library will be on your right. A fire station is next
door. A half-mile further west is Foodtown and Rite Aid, also on your right
and a traffic light. Continue west, straight through the traffic light,
towards Whitehouse, Ohio. The first road on your left will be Noward Road.
Turn left. It only goes left. In 1/8 mile you will see the airfield and the
Rocky Ridge sign on your right. Turn right, into the second driveway on the
right side. Follow the drive around to the right and back toward the
hangar's. See you there!
